How long have you been waiting for THIS information?! Geez Jamie, took long enough! Well, I wanted to make sure I gave you the BEST information and suggestions.
We already know that aromatherapy DOES work (previous post; olfactory system!) so we can move right past that! We also need to understand that stress and anxiety are 2 different things. I’ll give you the Merriam-Webster definition so you can make sure you’re looking at the right area in your life!
Stress – a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, etc.
Anxiety – fear or nervousness about what might happen.
Neither of these feelings or states are easy to “get over” so please don’t expect to put a couple oils in the diffuser and be “happy” for the rest of your life! Essential oils are a tool to help with sooo many things in our lives, but they are still just tools.
I feel pretty confident in saying that everyone has been stressed at some point in their life; some more than others! Anxiety, however, is a little deeper. You may have a moment of anxiety or you may have that feeling that something terrible is going to happen constantly.
I know, heavy right? We have to be real though! So, how the heck is a drop of oil going to help with these very real feelings?!
Well, there are certain essential oils that are proven to be a nervine and calmative, which enhances relaxation! Just diffusing the oil and breathing in those tiny molecules calms your mind down (God is pretty amazing, hey?!). This helps gives you the space and ability to confront what is causing the stress and/or anxiety.
Sometimes having those moments to step back and take a breath is enough to “confront and conquer” that worry or fear. Other times we need more than just a moment. That’s when oils can REALLY help!
When we smell that oil, we can stretch out that “moment” of calm and use those oils as tools to help us work through these feelings in a more calm and focused state of mind. I know, sounds all hippy and juju, but it’s science!
In times when I need help to have a calm mind I will diffuse, or apply, certain oils. I ALWAYS have my “calm” roller in my purse; I’ve put the recipe in the DIY tab!
My favourite essential oils for stress or anxiety are; Clary Sage, cedarwood, grapefruit, lavender, lemongrass, marjoram, orange, peace & calming, sacred frankincense, Stress Away and Ylang Ylang (there are many more!)
Everyone has different biology and will find that some oils help more than others; have fun and play around with it!
