Pale redhead with freckles here; I’ve dealt with my fair share of sunburns! You know, that burn where even the sheets are painful (unless you don’t use a sheet; apparently that’s a thing!).
Those after sun gels/lotions you see on the shelves? They may FEEL soothing at first and some even work a little to reduce the redness, but what else are you putting on your skin?
We’ve talked about toxins in our personal care products so you know that there are soooo many ingredients in most lotions that are toxic and dangerous for us. YES I said dangerous; not just “may be harmful” or “possible endocrine disruptor”… Even THOSE should set off warning signs; especially in something that is being absorbed into your already vulnerable & damaged skin!
So first things first; we want PURE ingredients that work with no added dyes or fragrances. Then we want ingredients that work to sooth, heal and minimize peeling like a snake (& getting what looks like dandruff because your hair was parted!). I use a DIY sun care spray AND a boughten product. In my DIY;
Pure Aloe Vera Gel – moisturizing, healing, soothing… this stuff has it ALL! In a pinch you can just use this, but having these other ingredients puts power behind that punch!
Witch Hazel – reduces inflammation due to the tannins in it (see, just a BIT of science!)
Vitamin E oil – for allll the moisture and skin healing properties!
Lavender Essential Oil – I’ve said it before, but lavender is the swiss army knife of oils (or like frank’s red hot… you know the catch phrase!!). For sunburns it’s soothing, amazing for your skin, and even reduces the redness!!! I’ve ALSO used just lavender on my skin in a pinch and LOVE IT! (like anything you need to keep in mind the potency of essential oils and make sure you are not just dousing yourself; it’s best to have a carrier oil (even lotion!), but it’s a gentle oil & I don’t have any problems with it. Use your discretion! PLUS you save $ by diluting; nothing wrong with that!
Peppermint Essential Oil – for that oh so cooling effect! When I put it on I actually feel my entire body cool down; no sweating & giving off heat like a furnace!
So I pop all of the above into a glass or stainless steel spray bottle, top with water and shake away. Then BOOM; done! Spray away! Another bonus? You don’t have to beg your hubby to rub it on your back!
ALL of these ingredients help and are perfect together, but if you don’t have them all no worries; just use what ya got! I’ve also just used lavender & peppermint in a spray bottle with water and it was awesome! Know better, do better, right?
Let me know if you need a hand with anything and feel free to share your new found info with your friends so they don’t have to suffer!
